Dear parents,
We have been busy this week! In math we are practicing different subtraction strategies with regrouping. We know expanded form, drawing a picture, using a number line and stacking with regrouping. The students are working on deciding which are their favorite 2 methods. In Social Studies we have been learning about 4 different countries, Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India. Right now we are trying to tie our Social Studies learning with our science unit of Bridges. We are looking at the land, climate and water (ocean, lakes, rivers) of the countries and deciding if those things influence their bridge building methods. In Social Studies and in our Literacy time we are working on taking jot notes when researching a subject. Thank you to those who have sent in supplies! We are also in need of glue gun sticks for all our design challenges! Thanks! Kira

We had a wonderful afternoon on our visit to St. Patrick's Island to look at Bridges! Thanks to all the volunteers who make these trips possible. Our purpose in going to this location was to look at and study the bridges. And there were so many on St. Patrick's Island. It was wonderful listening to the conversations the students were having and hearing all they've learned so far about bridges. They could name each type, we saw truss bridges, arch bridges, a cable-stayed bridge and beam bridges. They also discussed the important parts of each bridge. They indicated where the supports were and what kind of supports they saw (piers and abutments). They labelled the foundation and what forces (compression and tension) were being used in the different bridges. This trip really made our learning come to life! There are some pictures attached below. Dear parents,
Our field study to St. Patrick's Island is coming up on Thursday. The students will spend the afternoon outdoors so please ensure they have warm clothes and suitable footwear. We will be leaving the school at noon and returning by 3:00. Today we learned about compression and tension. We did a couple little experiments using our bodies to help us understand what these forces do. We also did a test to see what shape of pier would hold the most weight. Ask your child what they found. In math, we worked in interpreting data in the form of a graph. We are also moving into subtraction with regrouping. Dear parents,
Please remember that there is no school this Friday for students due to a PD day for teachers. This week we have been learning about bridges. We talked about the different jobs involved in making a bridge. We learned that landscapers, surveyors, photographers, engineers, designers, naturalists, safety inspectors, traffic experts, construction workers, contractors, artists etc... are all involved. We also decided if each job was part of the planning or building phase, or part of both! Ask your child which job they would be best suited for! We also had to make a bridge just using one piece of paper that would support a load over a 20cm span. We made an important discovery, ask your child how one piece of paper could support a load. In writing we did a character analysis of Ally from our Fish in a Tree book. We also tried experiencing what it's like for Ally to read with dyslexia. The students where presented with these "words" on the board: Ju jt nvdi ibsefs up sfbe xifo zpv epou ibwf uif dpef Each letter stands for another. Ask your student what it actually says! Dear parents,
We had an invigorating walk to Sue Higgins park yesterday. We were there to study the bridge that connects Sue Higgins and Carburn park. This was the start of our unit on Bridges. Thank you so much to the parent volunteers who helped us walk there safely! Today there are field trip forms for our upcoming trip to St. Patrick's Island in downtown Calgary on November 23. Please sign and return as soon as possible. We also need volunteers for this day. Please contact Lynette in the office if you are available. Fun lunch is this Thursday. There is no school Friday for students. Supplies needed: -toilet paper rolls (at least 4 per student) -pennies Dear parents,
What a great week at Maple Ridge School. They student's passion and interest in learning about why we have Remembrance Day was amazing. I want to say thank you to Mrs. T, Oliver's mom. She came in a talked with our class about her experience serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. We have enough volunteers for our walking field trip to Sue Higgins Park on Monday! Thank you for all those who have contacted me. If anyone has an aquarium they are not using, we would love to have one in our class for some mealworms. Library is on Monday. Cookie Dough orders went home today. Have a great weekend! Dear parents,
Yesterday I sent home a new set of Scholastic orders. If you wish to make a purchase, please have all orders in by November 17. Cheque or online payment only please! Field trips: We are going to reschedule our Sue Higgins park walk for Monday November 13th. The weather looks good! If you are available to join us for this walking field trip from 12:00- 3:00pm please let me know. We are also going to St. Patricks' Island on November 23. We need 4 volunteers for this trip. Please either let me or the office know if you are available. We have the Calgary Zoo field trip on December 4th which will also require 4 volunteers. Today we are making our Remembrance Day wreath with our Kindergarten buddies. The assembly is at 10:30 on Friday. All family members are welcome. Ask your student how much their plant grew in the last 2 days! Dear parents,
What a busy day. We got some time outside despite the cold temperatures. The school has a giant map that covers almost the whole floor of the gym that shows the migration routes of certain animals. We will be spending time this week learning about and using the map. Today we learned about the location of certain countries. We had library today, Please return books by next Monday. Please have your child continue to complete their moon journal. Today we had a poem on the phases of the moon and the students were given a sheet that names each moon phase. We did some more learning about naturalists today. We discussed if anyone had ever come upon a natural place that was disturbed by human actions. We had lots of comments on littering and pollution and careless acts that have damaged natural areas. Ask your student how many centimeters their plant has grown over the weekend. Mine grew 13 cm in 3 days! The school is having a Remembrance Day assembly on November 10th at 10:30 am. Families are welcome to attend. Dear parents,
What a chilly day! Thanks you for making sure students were sent to school with proper outside clothing. We have been going outside despite the cold temperatures for some fresh air. Today we had a zombie math riddle to solve. Ask your child how the lab workers escaped the zombies in time! I am happy to hear most students have been working on their moon journals. Tonight is the full moon for this month. We learned that in Thailand, they have a full moon lantern festival to celebrate the full moon in November. It is called Yi Peng. If it is too cloudy to see the moon, the students can access the following website to see the phases of the moon: https://www.timeanddate.com/moon/canada/calgary We also measured and made a chart to track the growth of our seedlings. Ask your child how tall their seedling is. Stay warm! |
