We had a busy day today. There are not many left! The year has gone by so quickly.
There will be 2 talent shows this week. Thursday the 21st at 1:30pm and Friday at 12:00pm. CHECK WITH YOUR CHILD WHEN THEY ARE PERFORMING. MS. HEBENTON WILL BE SENDING OUT A NOTICE TO EACH INDIVIDUAL CHILD WITH THE DAY THEY ARE PERFORMING. OUR CLASS WILL GET THERI NOTICES TOMORROW MORNING IN MUSIC. We have been looking at the landscapes of the 4 countries we are studying in Social Studies and wondering where would be a good place to build a civilization where the inhabitants could have a good quality of life. We looked at the different regions in the 4 countries and made note of the advantages and disadvantages of the different land formations. We need water in our communities, so we have to think about how we will get clean water and how we will get power to our societies without polluting the earth or wasting valuable resources. Students are going to make a 3D model of their civilizations. we started today. If there is anything at home that might contribute to these model, students are welcome to bring the items in to use.

We had our first Health Lesson today. Grade 4s brought home some "homework"- nothing serious just a guideline for discussion with your child. It's not necessary to write answers out. Just talk about what is on the sheet and sign and return to school .
The grade 3s are working on a "Vision Board" with MS. Pond. The Vision Board is a self- help tool to help set goals for yourself and to maintain a healthy self-concept. Have a great weekend! We had a very "Energetic" day! The students had a surprise fire drill yesterday just when the lunch bell was ringing to end lunch. I was away . The sub said some students did very well and some students needed many reminders of the protocol during a "Safe Fire Drill" practice. That is why we practice- so we will remain calm and know exactly what to do.
The school had a whole school photo taken yesterday as well. We were supposed to begin our grade 4 health unit today but due to confusion on my part about the arrangements for the grade 3s we did not get to it this afternoon. But we will do it tomorrow. My apologies to all. hOur Heart To Heart Market was a huge success!! We raised over $1500 for the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Those quarters really do add up!! Thank you to all parents who came and supported us and who supported in other ways by donating materials and supplies or helped to make things at home. You are all so terrific!
We are learning about telling time on an analog clock. Kinda tricky for some of us. If you can take the opportunity to explain how to tell time on an analog clock at home that would be helpful. We read a story (Weslandia) about a boy named Wesley who created his own civilization in his back yard. It all started with a pack of seeds. We are using this book as a jump start to think about where in the world we would build our own civilization out of the 4 countries we are studying in Social Studies. We are trying to think of a place where we feel the people will have a good quality of life. So the place must be near water. As well we are learning about how to care for the earth in Our Waste in Our World unit in science. So our civilization must have renewable resources and more earth friendly forms of energy. Students will investigate the goods and services that could be available to anyone who decides to move to our civilization. And of course, the population must have jobs available when they move to our civilization so students will need to consider industries to promote their land. Tomorrow is the BIG DAY!! Heart to Heart form 1:30-2:45.
Bring your quarters! or loonies or toonies! It all adds up to help support the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society Come one come all!! Grade 4 Parents Only: A Notice went home today that needs your attention regarding our last health unit of the year. Please look for it in your child's backpack, sign and return to school by Monday. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Only one more day till the Heart to Heart Market!! Parents and families are welcome to join us! From 1:30-2:45. If students are bringing money- they do not need to bring quarters- it could be loonies toonies or bills. That would make less counting for us:-)
The deadline for any money made from fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart is tomorrow- May 30. Today we worked on fractions as parts of sets.
We made a total of what we have ready to sell/play at the Heart to Heart Market on Thursday. It's very close and we are getting very excited. RT Alderman – Welcome Event – New students
Students and family who are new to RT Alderman School for 2018/19 are welcome to attend an open house on June 1 from 1:45- 2:45. For more information, please contact RT Alderman School. Heart To Heart May 31st Bring your quarters! At Maple Ridge School we believe that developing citizenship through helping others is part of who we are. If you are new to our school, the Heart to Heart Market is a way for kids to think on a more global level and find ways that they can contribute to others in the world. This year the Market will be held May 31st from 1:45-3:00. Students in grade 3 and 4 run the Market and vote on a cause they would like to give the money they make. Last year, it was The Calgary Food Bank This year, we have decided to give all money raised to the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Each year the Grade 3 and 4 students create crafts such as bracelets, bookmarks, art cards, etc. that they can sell at the market. Some students have chosen to make other arcade type games that students or parents can play. A few days before the Market, Grade 3 and 4 teachers will distribute “Tickets” to each of the Homeroom classes. Any student who brings in money for the Market will be able to get 1 ticket for each 25c they bring in up to a maximum of 20 tickets. Students will get to go ‘shopping’ at the Marketplace on May 31st. (If you are unable to donate this year, each student will still get 4 tickets. We still want each student to experience the excitement of the Market. ) On the day of the Market, the grade 3s and 4s will be setting out a table or an activity where items may be purchased or played in increments of 1-3 tickets (any donation will be accepted). Students will get to go ‘shopping’ at the Marketplace using their tickets- with ALL proceeds going towards Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Parents and family are invited to come on the day of the Market to purchase tickets to buy items or play games and just experience the energy and excitement the students have for this cause. Start saving your quarters! They all add up. We look forward to being able to send our love and support…from our hearts to theirs. Maple Ridge students have an opportunity to really make a difference! Hope to see you all there. Sincerely, All the Maple Ridge students and teachers of Grade 3 and 4 We had a great day today! The weather was amazing and the trip was very informative- very connected to what we have been learning about animal life cycles as well as the science unit we are learning about now- "Waste and Our World."
Some kids came without water bottles and hats which the folks at Ann And Sandy Cross were happy to provide. FYI-The bottles and hats are washed every night and they keep them there for this exact purpose. Next week we will be having our Heart To Heart Market on Thursday, May 31 from 1:30-2:45pm. Students are asked to bring in a donation for the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. The money the bring in will buy tickets which they will use to buy items at the market or to play some of the arcade type games students have made. Each ticket is worth 25c. Parents and Family are also welcome to come and participate in our Market. There will be tickets for sale at the front door on the afternoon of the market. We hope you can come.
