Dear parents,
Everyone is excited for Halloween tomorrow! We started painting the base for some Witch art that we will be working on tomorrow afternoon. We will also be cutting a pumpkin and looking at what is on the inside! Please remind your child to do their Moon Journal each night! We will be talking about it daily. Our seeds are sprouting! We transported our seeds from their moistened towel in a baggie, to some soil. We are looking forward to seeing them grow! Happy Halloween tomorrow!

Dear parents,
What a busy week! We did an ozobot challenge yesterday. The students had to create an increasing pattern using the codes with their ozobot. Ask them what their increasing pattern was. If any parents are willing to send in some healthy snacks for Halloween Day, please let me know. Students are allowed to wear costumes that day, if they wish. Please no full face masks or any weapons, or anything gory or grotesque. Email me if you have any questions. If you have any clear water bottles, please send them to the class. We need see through containers for planting our seeds. We have library Monday. Please send in all books for renewal or return. The students came home with a Moon Journal yesterday. Starting Sunday October 29th, they will start recording what the moon looks like every evening for 28 days. Dear parents,
We had a interesting discussion yesterday in room 5 about what is happening with the leaves? We learned some new words such as "solstice" and "equinox". You can ask your children what those words mean. We also talked about having a growth mindset and what we can tell ourselves when we face a challenge. We read the book "The Dot". The main character was stuck in a situation. Ask your child what changed and what was the turning point? I am still in need of one more volunteer for our walking field trip to Sue Higgins park on November 2nd. We are not leaving the school until 12:00pm and will return at 3:00 pm. Mathletics cards will be sent home today. This is a online math resource for your child to use to practice different math concepts. Dear parents,
Our November walking field trip to Sue Higgins park is fast approaching! I am still in need of 2 volunteers to join us for this trip. Please email me at [email protected] if you are available. Today we worked on some strategies to make our writing more interesting to read. Specifically, interesting beginnings. We learned some different ways to make an introduction more interesting. Ask your children if they remember some of the ways. We had library today. Please return books on or before next Monday. We asked a question today....What is happening to the leaves? We had a very interesting discussion. Ask your students! Dear parents,
This week went by very quickly! Yesterday we were introduced to Ozobots! You can ask your child what they are and how they work. We also worked on doing some descriptive writing. We had to write about a trip we wanted to take. They could either choose an imaginary or real destination. We brainstormed ideas of activities they could do on their trip and things they would experience. Ask your child about their dream trip! We completed our TWAS writing today. Your child should have their yellow duotang in their backpacks. Please go over their letter with them and read our poem of the week on photosynthesis. Library is on Monday! Our class is working on earning points that go towards a reward system. Returning library books is a way they can earn extra points! Have a great weekend! Dear parents,
Today was much more pleasant to be outside than windy yesterday! Today we had a discussion about photosynthesis. We discussed the role of the leaves in this process. We learned about different parts of the leaf such as the xylem and stomata You can ask your child if they remember what those words mean! We also worked on a reflection page for our marble labyrinths. We discussed what worked well and how the groups worked together. Tomorrow is fun lunch for those who ordered. Our next upcoming field study is a walking trip to Sue Higgins Bridge. We need 2 volunteers for this trip. If you are available, please contact the office. Dear parents,
It was a short buy very busy week in room 5. The students wrote their TWAS letters today. Look for their yellow duotangs in backpacks. Please send the duotangs back to school on Tuesday after reading and going over their poems and letters together. We will have Library on Tuesday next week. There is no school Monday for students. Here are some of our upcoming dates for field trips. If you are available to volunteer, please contact the office: November 2nd - walking field study to Sue Higgins Bridge (1/2) day - 2 + volunteers needed November 16th - St. Patricks Island (3/4 day) - 4 or 5 volunteers needed December 4 - Calgary Zoo (full day) - 4 or 5 volunteers needed Dec. 19th - Inglewood Bird Sanctuary (3/4 day) - 4 or 5 volunteers needed Dear parents,
Today we put our inference knowledge into action. Each student had a canister filled with a mystery sample. They had to infer what was inside using observations, qualitative and quantitative. They had to calculate the mass, determine if it had magnetic properties and listen for any sounds their sample made and describe what they heard. Then they had to take their data collected and apply their background knowledge to infer what their mystery sample was. They also had to compare their data with another student and find a matching mystery sample. We also read a book called Seven Blind Mice. Ask your child about it. We also completed making our marble labyrinth! Pictures to come next week. Room 5 class fees are now available online for payment. Dear parents,
I hope you all had a great long weekend. Today we learned about what an inference and observation is. Ask your child who Dr. Xargle is and what he was making observations and inferences about. We also started a math word challenge which we will continue tomorrow. We talked about ways to approach math challenges. You can ask your child some of the strategies we talked about when encountering a difficult problem. We are starting the construction of our marble labyrinth and will be glueing and cutting this week. Dear parents,
We had a wonderful day yesterday at Reader Rock Garden. We learned so much about important people who made Calgary what it is today. Specifically, about William Reader, the first Superintendent of Calgary Parks and Recreation. He was passionate about horticulture and designed this amazing garden. We learned about his methods of planning and design to make an optimal garden. Also about how he kept detailed journals documenting what plants he used and and what thrived in the Calgary climate. Thank you so much to the volunteers who joined us on this trip! This week we have been working on writing conventions and how to made our writing easy for others to read by adding proper punctuation, using upper case letters appropriately and making sure our writing makes sense. We continued on our design challenge and started the construction of our marble labyrinths. Tomorrow is early dismissal and Friday is no school for students. I hope to see you all at conferences. |
