Dear parents,
Where did January go? It's been a busy month and February looks even busier! Yesterday we had STEM robotics visit the school. The students had an opportunity to explore with the robots and do some programming. Thanks to the parent helpers who volunteered their time to help with this activity. On Monday in math, we introduced multiplication. For some students this is a new concept where as for others this is quite familiar. Grade 3 students need to know (memorized) up to 5x5 and grade 4 students need to know (have memorized) up to 9x9. We will be using games and word problems to work on these. Also on Monday, another swim ability form was sent home. Please fill it out as soon as possible as the pool needs the forms to put the students into ability groups. Swimming starts on Monday. If you have not returned your forms please do so as soon as possible. Our class will be leaving first thing in the morning for the bus so please have your children at school on time that week. Also, swimming makes students extra hungry so pack extra snacks that week:)

Dear parents,
We had an amazing photo session we had today with our artist in residence, Mr. W. He taught us some techniques in class about how to focus, fill the screen, change perspective and about texture and lines. Then we got to go outside and put the lessons to practice. The students took some amazing pictures from the perspective of another creature, whether it was a mouse, ant, bird or dog. I am excited for you to see their work. Today we started a weekly spelling program. The students have their words written in their yellow duotangs and they are to practice each day in preparation for the quiz on Friday. The students are to be accountable for their own duotangs. They should keep them in their backpacks and take them out to practice their words. the words this week are: cable abutment pier deck tension compression bridge span load force Last week the students received field trip forms for our upcoming swimming program. Please return them to school as soon as possible. Today a new swim ability form was sent home that also needs to be filled out and returned to school. We are starting a new reward system with the beads we have been exchanging for money. If anyone has any items they could donate to a classroom treasure box, please send them to school. These should be inexpensive, unwrapped items, such as dollar stores items, mini-journals, funky pencils or pens, happy meal prizes etc... Dear parents,
Please remember to book a time on Thursday evening or Friday for parent-teacher interviews. Thursday is early dismissal and there is no school Friday for students. We had library today. Please return books by next Monday. We have our field trip to The Bird Sanctuary on Wednesday. We will leave at 9:30 and be back at 1:45 pm. It looks like a beautiful day but it may be wet on the trails so please have your children wear boots for walking outside. Today we used some sample menus and worked on adding and subtracting decimals. We are also writing acrostic poems that describe ourselves using similes and metaphors. Dear parents,
We have our field trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary next week on January 24th. Please remember the students will have to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for spending time outside. They will need to bring 2 snacks and a lunch. TWAS writing will be in backpacks today. The students edit their writing with a peer. They look for correct spelling of sight words, proper use of upper and lowercase letters, appropriate punctuation, making their letters the right size and using spacing. This week we learned about using transition words, smilies and metaphors to make our writing more interesting. These are things you can look for as your read the letter with the students. We are finishing up our bridge building next week. Thank you to all those who have sent in supplies! We still need some glue gun sticks for next week if anyone has some to send in. Students will be starting recorders on Monday in Music. Students who already own a recorder will need to start bringing it to school on Monday. If they ordered one, they will be receiving them next week. Thank you Dear Parents,
Scholastic orders were sent home yesterday. If you wish to place an order, please have them in by the date indicated on the forms. Maple Ridge school will be having swimming lessons in February. We will be going from February 5-8 and room 5 will swimming from 9:30- 10:15. We will be leaving the school at 9:15am on those days. If you are available to help in the change room at those times please let me know. Men are needed for the boys change room. We have been doing a lot of building in room 5! This week our poem was about how writers are builders too, except rather than build with materials like steel or concrete, writers build with words. We learned some strategies on how to make our writing more interesting by using metaphors and similes. You can ask your child what those are! We are doing gymnastics in Phys. Ed. We are doing mat work this week and we have been practicing some balances and counter balances with a partner. We connected this to our learning on bridges and how the forces of push and pull have to balance out so the bridge doesn't fall down! Ask your child about some of the balances they learned. Fun lunch tomorrow! Dear parents,
At this point in the year I have told the students we should be working on making our writing more interesting to read. We have learned the conventions such as proper spacing, making our letters the right size, using upper and lower case letters correctly and using correct punctuation. We are now focusing on making our writing more interesting. Today we learned about transition words that help sequence our writing and add flow. The students had to write a letter persuading me to view their bridge presentations and they were required to use some of the transition words we learned. They were pretty convincing! We have our Inglewood Bird Sanctuary trip on January 24th. This is next week. Please return the student forms and contact Lynette if you are able to volunteer for this trip. Fun lunch is Thursday this week! We are continuing to word on learning the place values of tenths and hundredths and to represent parts of numbers using decimals and fractions. Dear parents,
It's a busy time in room 5! We are working on our Bridge Symposium project and the students have been working in groups to research about a bridge type they have chosen. They've had to do a scientific diagram and are starting to build a 3D model of their bridge. They have to buy the supplies they need for building. The students are busy earning beads that they can exchange for money. They earn beads by following classroom rules. New forms for the Inglewood Bird Santuary trip on January 24th are being sent home today. Today we did a demonstration in class about why the moon changes shape each night. The students are bringing home a styrofoam ball so they can do the demonstration at home. You will just need the styrofoam ball, a light (without a lampshade) and a sharp pencil. The link to a video of the demonstration is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wz01pTvuMa0&sns=em Happy New Year!
Hopefully everyone had a restful and fun break. Everyone seem ready to get back to learning! The students have homework tonight! They have a survey to complete and it is due tomorrow if possible. It should not take more than 10-15 minutes. They are to ask 3 people a question regarding the moon. They can ask anyone, kids, adults and/or call friends on the phone to ask. We have rescheduled our Inglewood Bird Sanctuary trip that was cancelled to due poor weather and driving conditions. The new date is January 24th. Please contact Lynette in the office if you are available to volunteer. We are starting a new building project. We will be needing to following supplies: -duct tape -glue gun sticks -toilet paper rolls Please remember there is no school Friday for students. We are starting work with decimals and fractions in math this week. Ask your child the new place values they learned. We discussed the term "resolution" and why people make resolutions in January. Please ask your child what they are planning to work on this year. |
