We had a Fire Drill this morning.
Today Mrs. Langlois came to our class to show us how to use i-movie to help us make a documentary about our animal we are researching. We have a few things to do yet before we get started on it. She going to come back next week and teach us how to add transitions and our voice. We watched and listened to a high school band from Saskatoon play this afternoon. They played Star Wars theme and they introduced us to all the families of instruments and their names. See if your child can remember any of them. Tomorrow we are writing TWAS - please bring your TWAS books. Still looking for yarn if anyone has any extra to donate. Thanks. May 2 is HATS ON for Mental Health. Students may wear a hat to school to show their support. Today we had an in class presentation about agriculture and where our food comes from. We had a lovely presenter named MS. Dana who explained to us what it was like on a farm. We learned that agriculture is more than just chickens, cows and pigs. It is also about science ( creating new crops and finding new ways to use present crops like turning canola oil into biofuel).
Talk to your child about it. I am sure they have lots to explain. Hooray for the good weather!! Everyone is in such a good mood.
Today we watched an inspirational video to get us thinking about the Heart To Heart Market. www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U It is called Caine's Arcade. Students were buzzing with so many ideas afterwards. We hope you will all be able to make it. Our Owl/Vole stories are almost finished. We are working on animal research as well. We all chose an animal form another country. Mrs. Langlois is going to come to our class on Thursday to show us how to make an i-movie with the information. Today we read a story called, "Wolf Island". In the story many animals live on the island together and there is food enough for all. The food chain is balanced. the wolves leave the island and this upsets the balance of nature. The deer become overpopulated because there are no longer animals to eat them and they soon eat most of the grass. The grass becomes sparse and the deer resort to eating the bark on tress which kills the trees. Now most of the animal populations are dwindling and sick. When the deer finally come back to the island the balance of nature is returned. This helped us understand the food chain and what we are learning about animals.
This afternoon we had a brainstorming session about the Heart To Heart Market. This is an event hosted by the grade 3/4 classes and will take place on MAY 31. The students choose a charity to raise money for and they make items to sell at the market or create a game or activity that other kids might want to play. We sell tickets and count the money that we make afterwards! In the past, we have raised money for Ronald McDonald House, The Mustard Seed, the Food Bank and The Canadian Hunger Foundation. Students connect all of the items they make to curriculum and they learn how to think like global citizens in the process. They are joined in a common purpose which creates an immense sense of community in the whole school! After learning how to finger knit last week we have a great need for yarn of any kind if you have any around your house that you might like to donate:-) I will be asking for other donations as we have a better idea of all of the crafts/activities we will be creating and what materials we might need. Reminder that it will be early dismissal tomorrow- 1:20 like on Fridays.
Student Led Conferences will take place Thursday evening from 3:30-7:30 and Friday morning from 8:00-10:00 am. There are NO CLASSES ON FRIDAY. I look forward to seeing you all at conferences. Students are looking forward t sharing their learning with you. Today we learned how to finger knit with Mrs. Villaroman. It was so good to see and feel the sun today- AHHHHHHH!!! Maybe spring is not far off.
This afternoon we saw a presentation called the Birth of the CPR- that stands for the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was a very lively musical with 3 men who sang bluegrass, boogie woogie and rock in an operetta style. Through the songs and crazy actions of the singer/actors, we learned how the railway was built by Sir John A McDonald, Walter Moberly, Sanford Fleming, A.B.Rogers, Andrew Onderdonk and William Van Horne. They talked about how hard it was to build "trestles" through the rocky mountains and how dangerous it was because theu had to use dynamite. The men played banjo, guitar, violin, madolin and a giant bass fiddle. It was very entertaining. Reminding all parents to come out on Thursday evening from 3:30-7:30 and Friday morning from 8:00-10:00 for Student Led Conferences. You don't need to make an appointment. Thursday will be EARLY DISMISSAL (1:20) AND- there is no school on Friday- unless you are coming on that day for your conference;-) I thought the expression was: "April showers bring May flowers." We had fun in the snow anyway. We had a snowman building competition at recess.
Thursday this week is EARLY DISMISSAL at 1:20 FRIDAY- NO SCHOOL for students. We are getting ready to share our learning on Thursday night and Friday morning at Student Led Conferences. This is an opportunity for you to come and see what your child has been learning. They will lead the interview. At the end, the grade3/ 4 teachers would like parents to help each student write a reflection about: Something I am proud if... because..... An example of my best work... because..... My goal for the rest of the year is to.... I can use your help (parents) by..... Even though students are leading the interview, if you have any questions you want to ask me, please come and see me. There will be other parents in the classroom at the same time. If what you have to say/ask is delicate in nature, I can always do a phone call after school or you can call and we can set up another time to come in to discuss concerns. Conferences are Thursday from 3:30pm-7:30pm Friday from 8:00am- 10:00am Tomorrow afternoon we are going to see a presentation about: The BIRTH OF THE CPR. Despite the poor weather, Aggie Days was a HUGE SUCCESS!! Enjoyed by students and adults alike!! Students created many memories. Thanks again to the parents who volunteered! We really appreciate your time and commitment to supporting your children's learning. Tomorrow we wil write our TWAS so please bring your TWAS books!! Tomorrow we go to Aggie Days!!! Yay!
Bring a lighter jacket, a water bottle and healthy snacks and lunch. The school has set tomorrow, April 12, as a day to honour the victims of the Humbolt hockey team. If students wish, they can wear a jersey to show support for the team. If they do not own a jersey and would still like to show support, they may wear yellow and green, the colours of the hockey team. Today we worked on our stories and our weaving. We made a date with Ms. Villaroman to come and weave a basket with us next Wednesday. We will all need to bring a "CLEAN" yogurt container or a sour cream type container for the basket. Here are some pictures from Leighton Center yesterday. |
