Wow, it's the last day of November!
Today we were kept very busy with all our school work. We wrote a reflection about our work with the Ozobots last week. How we made a repeating pattern, what the rule was and how we persevered with 1 challenging problem we had while working in our group. We had time today to work on our bridge designs. Some of us got to test our bridges. We wrote about our designs, how we built them what materials we used, how we chose our design and why we chose it as well as what we did to make our bridge stand up the the crazy problem we thought about. They are in the library now. Tomorrow morning the grade 1/2 s will come and look at them and give us feedback. Mayors Food Drive Beginning the week of December 4th, students in our classroom are encouraged to bring food donations to support the annual Mayor’s Food Bank Drive. We will be using the donations to support and deepen learning within our classrooms. You can follow the link below to view the most needed items that are currently requested by our food bank. http://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/about/our-wishlist/ Our boxes will be picked up between December 18th and 21st. Please help us fill our boxes and support the hungry and needy in Calgary!

WOW! What a busy day.
In gym today, we practiced our badminton skills. Ms. Miller introduced a fun new piece of equipment made of sponge. We had a competition to see how many times we could keep the "birdie" going back and forth with our partner. The class record is 19. In math we continued our work with understanding graphs. We looked at the different parts of a graph, like the Title, the x-axis, the y-axis and the key. We learned why it is important for graphs to have these parts labeled. We used data we collected as a class about what we thought the strongest type of bridge is and we turned it into a bar graph. We answered questions(Observations) about the information in the graph. In science, we found out we only have 4 pieces of cardboard for each group to make a bridge! So we had to plan our bridges carefully. We also learned that we have to be able to test our bridge for the "crazy problem" we came up with. As we think about scientific literacy, we are getting better at creating more scientific diagrams. When we looked at engineer drawings of bridges today, we saw that they included important information like measurements, what different forces are acting on the bridge and the materials they used. So we tried to do the same on our bridge designs today. The most important lesson we learned today was how to get along in a group. It can be difficult when other people do not choose our ideas. Sometimes we get so excited to do our work we forget that other people in the group need a job to do too. So we practiced a lot and talked a lot about how a group should get along- just like in real life. SO tomorrow, we are going to come prepared to think about and act upon the best ways to support our group so we can get the job of building a bridge done most effectively and enjoyably. Note From Mrs. Hebenton!! Choir will be performing on Thursday, December 21 at 9:20 am. We have decided to wear green and red on top. Any color on the bottom. We hope you can join us! Today we learned more about graphs. We compared 2 graphs in our social studies text book about where people lived in Ukraine and India. We found out that in Ukraine, more people live in the city. In India, more people live in the country.
In gym we are learning racket skills. In science, we watched a few short videos about how forces like tension and compression can affect different building materials like bricks, plastic and wood. We also saw how to make a bridge stronger against forces like wind or earthquakes. We need to know this information so we can use it in our ingenuity project to make our group's bridge strong. For homework this week, practice the 2 and 4 times tables. Write down any patterns you notice. Read a book on RAZkids and answer the comprehension questions.
We read a friendship book today and made a friendship card for another student in the classroom. In math we are looking at graphs. We learned that graphs are pictures of "data" or facts. When you look at a graph it tells a story of the information. we can figure out the story by reading the graph.Today we looked at "Pie or Circle Graphs". We found graphs in our social studies text book and compared information about the kind of jobs they have in Peru and Tunisia. Please if you see graphs, take a moment to "read" them with your child. Find out the information the graph holds. We had a great week. TWAS are in back packs.
WE had a great experience at St. Patrick's Island. There were so many bridges for us to see there and help us with our learning in science! I would highly recommend a family outing their to walk around and see them all! Beginning the week of December 4th, students in each classroom are encouraged to bring food donations to support the annual Mayor’s Food Bank Drive. Students will be using the donations to support and deepen learning within their classrooms. You can follow the link below to view the most needed items that are currently requested by our food bank. http://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/about/our-wishlist/ Our boxes will be picked up between December 18th and 21st. Please help us fill our boxes and support the hungry and needy in Calgary! Hey everybody! Christmas festivities are quickly approaching. We will be having a Christmas caroling sing a long in the gym, the last week before winter break. We will begin at 9:15 sharp for approximately 20 minutes. We’ll play Christmas music as the signal to head to the gym. Parents are invited!!! (from Mrs. Hebenton) Mrs. Jones is back today from Vancouver. We had a good day today.
There was no homework assigned this week. Tomorrow we are going on our filed trip to St. Patrick's Island. There will be a lot of walking. Please listen to weather forecast and dress accordingly. Students will be sketching and identifying types and parts of bridges while on the trip. IF YOU HAVE NOT SENT IN YOUR PARENT CONSENT FROM- PLEASE DO SO TOMORROW- STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COME IF I DO NOT HAVE IT. THANK YOU. I was late sending home some of the TWAS. Please read and respond before Friday. Please bring TWAS tomorrow. We will write our weekly letter as there is no school on Friday for students.
It was an excellent day. In Gym, Ms. Miller taught us another new game called Cleanup. It was fun. In math we explored larger numbers and looked at ways to represent 1 000 (gr3) and 10 000 (gr 4) This afternoon we did a "Picture Walk" in Social Studies and looked at a photographs in the text book. It was interesting looking at all the different photos from around the world. The countries we will study are Peru, Tunisia, India and Ukraine. In Science, Ms. Miller taught about some forces that affect bridges. We did some fun activities to help us understand the forces. Ask your child what tension and compression mean. We are talking a lot about the ZONES OF REGULATION and how we can regulate our bodies to stay in the "Green Zone" which is where we want our brains and bodies to be when we are focused on our work. I missed entering a blog message yesterday- There is no paper homework this week. Please read on RAZKIDS and spend some time on Mathletics.
FIELD TRIP FORMS WENT HOME TODAY- for our trip to St . Patrick's Island on Nov. 23. We had a great walk to Sue HIggins Bridge. Many students recognized it as a place where they had walked with their parents or dog. Some students were familair with the pathways because they bike their with their families. This was the beginning of our study into bridges. Students sketched the bridge from multiple angles and looked closely at the materials the bridge was made from. AS well, they looked closely for any shapes they could see. Afterwards, students completed a SEE, THINK, WONDER Thinking Routine. Students particularly noticed the ducks that were swimming in the water and the dogs who were about. They also noticed that the bridge had "things" shapes like an "H" with metal ropes or cables that seemed to be holding it up. They wondered how old the bridge was, who built it, and much weight it could hold. Our walk was invigorating and the weather cooperated beautifully. Today, we read a poem called "The Bridge Builder." tomorrow we will discuss further the meaning of the poem and a different reason why the old man built a bridge to "span the chasm." Ms. Miller, our student teacher taught us a fun game in gym called Sleeping Dragons that helped us with soccer skills. She also gave us word problems in math about bridges. Students are getting better at choosing a strategy, explaining how they used the strategy and showing their work. Homework and TWAS are due back tomorrow morning.
Today we finished our peace art and our poems about peace. While working with the giant National Geographic Map in the gym, we learned that Canada is a Country in North America and Calgary is a city in the province of Alberta. We learned that Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories! We are measuring the length of the migration routes of endangered animals with chains. We rescheduled our field trip to Sue Higgins Bridge to Monday, November 13. We could use a few volunteers. I have one right now. New homework went home today. Please look for it in your child's backpack.
We have a student teacher! Her name is Ms. Miller. She will be in our classroom until Dec. 12. Today, she taught us a fun Math activity called "Too High? Too Low?" It helped us to understand place value as well as mentally adding and subtracting by 1s, 10s, and 100s. We have a GIANT map form National Geographic. It is so huge it takes up nearly the entire gym floor!! It is the map of North America. Tomorrow we will spend some time looking at it closely. |
