Happy Halloween!!
We had a great day today. We managed to get some work done and still enjoy a bit of halloween fun. We decorated pumpkins with our buddies and worked on a trick math problem. As well, we finished and performed our advertisements for our inventions. Try to stay dry tonight. Please do not bring a lot of candy tomorrow..

No paper homework went home today. Please log into RAZKIDS and read a book.
You can log in as well to matheletics for an assignment there. Tomorrow students are welcome to wear a costume- please no bloody ones that may frighten a smaller child. There will be a parade in the morning. Healthy snacks are welcome but please no candy- On Thursday, we are going to be walking to Fish Creek Park. The weather is supposed to be cool/cold so CHILDREN WILL NEED TO BE DRESSED APPROPRIATELY. We will be skecthing outside so a pair of mittens or gloves would help keep hands warmer. If the weather is really poor, we will reschedule for another day. We had a busy but productive day.
We worked a lot on building our inventions we designed that would help a plant meet one of its needs. Some of our ideas were very difficult to build. Others did not work like we imagined they would. Some of us wanted to quit because it was "so hard". But then we remembered the power of the word-"YET". We persevered and tried something new. We realized the power of team work and how to share the ideas and workload to make sure the job gets done. Some tested their work and we made a bit of a watery mess in the classroom:-) The rest will test tomorrow. Please bring TWAS for tomorrow and homework. Here are some of our inventions: Today we started to build our designs. Some students brought materials. If you have anything at home that can help, please send it tomorrow. We will work on them some more.
This afternoon we met with Mrs. Hartmann's class. They introduced us to "Ozobots." They are very cool, very tiny robots that can be programmed. They will follow a path made by marker. They respond to red, blue, black and green. It was very exciting. Ask you child about it. Thanks to evryone who has paid for field trips so far. We will need a few volunteers for Nov. 2 to walk to the Sue Higgin's Bridge. We will also need volunteers for the Nov. 23rd trip to St.Patrick's Island. I have 1 confirmed and 1 possible for the 23rd. Please Note: I have given you the wrong date for St. Patrick's Island field trip. It is Nov. 23rd- NOT- Nov. 16th as stated on the letter that went home. My apologies!
Today we had a very mixed up day. We had picture retakes , which occupied the gym, which changed our gym schedule, which changed all our internal schedules! We had a presentation today from Miss Denise, an Occupational Therapist about The Zones of Regulation. Today we discussed the colours and emotions associated with these zones. We also wrote about a time we felt each of these colours and what was happening at that time. In math today we practiced different ways to solve math problems, like: using an addition tree, breaking apart the numbers, drawing pictures of the numbers with base 10 blocks or using a number line. New homework went home today. Please look for it in your child's backpack.
If you have not paid fo Field Trips please do so as soon as possible. You can pay online. We are working on descriptive writing and are learning how to write a descriptive paragraph about a character in a story. We are almost finished our class mural. In science we will begin to look at how we can make our designs from last week. If students have materials they think will help them at home that they can bring to school that will be most helpful. Thanks to those who remembered to bring in their homework today. if you need a bit more time, please bring it in on Monday. Parents, thank you for your support with TWAS. Students are really looking forward to reading your letters to them. This week we discussed what it was like in your community when you were kids. They really liked that. When somebody is reading their letters it is more motivating to do this each week. Have a great weekend. Here's what our "community" looks like so far... Some of the things we believe you need to have a good quality of life are: trees for oxygen, roads, houses, green spaces, parks, water, a hospital and a pet store. We have mountains to hike in and a river for water to drink. Our power is supplied through sustainable means like solar panels, wind energy and hydro electricity. Wow what a fast week!!
Homework is due tomorrow and TWAS. Today Grade 3s did a piece of writing for the SLAs. The Grade 4s wrote the same prompt. The question was "If you could take a trip anywhere, where would you go?" Students had to make a plan and then write. They watched and listened to a few examples from previous years to help with ideas. They had to check their work for spelling, punctuation and organization. Then they wrote a reflection about what they felt they did well and what they might add or change next time to make their writing even better. This afternoon in Science, students put on their "Inventor's Hats." They worked alone or with a partner to design a device that would help plants meet their needs better. They discussed, sketched, labeled and explained their inventions. Then they shared their ideas with another pair. They other groups provided feedback and questions to help students iron out the potential hiccups in their designs. Then we looked at "Crazy Kids’ Inventions Turned Into Real Products" (15 Pics) on the boredpanda website. Now everyone is wondering if their design can be made into a "real invention". Thanks to all who returned their homework last week. New homework and reading went home yesterday. There was no Blog message as we had no power at the
school! Today we worked on a few math word problems. We are beginning to look at how to read a math problem carefully to find the important information we need to solve the problem. We are also working on "How to Show Our Thinking and Explain our Strategies." Tomorrow we will have BOOK EXCHANGE as we missed it on Monday. Please bring library books. FYI_ THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY- it is a teacher professional development day. Today we "drummed in" the assembly. Our class did a great job!! I sent home 2 notices today. The first was in regards to field trips we will be partaking in from now until January. A second letter will go home in January for field trips for second half of the year. The second letter is in regards to RAZKIDS. This is an online reading resource for kids. There are instructions how to access RAZKIDS and how to login. I attached a yellow card that has student's username and password for RAZKIDS. On the back is their username and password for Matheletics. Matheletics, if you are unfamiliar with it is an online Math resource. Students can login and practice math skills. |
