Another busy day!
Today we worked on our stories. We learned some more about the Magic of 3 to create suspense and how to write an interesting beginning that will capture the reader's interest. Instead of starting a story with, "One day," or "Hi, my name is..," or "This story is about..." we are going to try one of the following methods:
On Thursday, please have students at the classroom by 7:10. Then we will organize to go to the gym. Parents can look at the art BEFORE the performance or AFTER the performance. Just be in the class by 7:10 and know that the Gala is over at 8:00. Mrs. Hebenton has asked our class to wear blue and green if possible. Today we mounted our art for the Gala on Thursday night. Students were shown multiple options by Ms. Langlois last week and given some advice on how to make their posters looked balanced, artistic and neat. Students arranged the photos how they felt would display them the best.
We began writing a story today. We are writing from the perspective of the animal we found in the owl pellet. Some of the students found rodents, some found voles and a few found birds. We shared some ideas and made a plan. We will begin to write tomorrow. I don't think they will be ready for the Gala on Thursday, but you will be able to see the beginning process. Our Call Time is 7:10pm on Thursday- students need to be here in the classroom by 7:00. They will then go to library to get organized to enter the gym for their performance. Students are asked to wear BLUE AND GREEN if they own anything in those colours. Parents are NOT BEING ASKEd TO GO AND BUY ANYTHING NEW. :-) Just a reminder about the Science Olympics meeting at lunchtime tomorrow for any students interested in representing Maple Ridge at the Science Olympics. All students are invited- not just science students. We had a very busy day of typing our captions!! The Spring Gala is on Thursday Night. Our class is supposed to wear blue or green if they can. Our "Call Time" is listed in the schedule below. Room 9 will perform at this time. All students in my class need to be here 10 minutes prior to our class time.
We are excited to try something a little new with respect to how our students highlight and showcase their artistic skills. On March 22 we will be hosting a Spring Gala. It will be from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. During the evening every student will have the chance to perform with their peers at some point in the gym. There will be 6 different performances throughout the evening. Think of these performances almost as mini-concerts. When your child needs to be in their classrooms is listed below. Class Call-Time (students to be in classroom) Mrs. Villaroman & Ms. Pond 5:50 PM Mrs. Sudbury & Mrs. Lee 6:10 PM Mrs. Hildebrand, Mrs. Hill & Ms. Fraser 6:30 PM Mrs. Pittman, Mrs. McCaw & Ms. Moore 6:50 PM Mrs. Jones & Mrs. Langlois 7:10 PM Ms. Watts & Mrs. Hartmann 7:30 PM After the performance, parents are welcome to do an art walk around the school to see all of the photography and art showcased. HOPE EVERYONE CAN MAKE IT!! * Exact performance times will be displayed and provided to all families upon arrival that evening. A letter went home today. It was invitation for any students who may wish to participate in the "APEGA Science Olympics". All Maple Ridge students are invited. This is a copy of the letter in case it did not make it home.:-) Today we took a second closer look at our photos and worked on our captions. We think we may need to revise a couple of times before we get it right- we are just learning how to do this after all. :-) We want to include scientific vocabulary as well as photography vocabulary- things we learned from Mr. W. the photographer and from Ms. Ramsay, who also helped us understand how to take a "good " photo.
We sketched owls from real photographs today. Our sketches skills are really improving. We pay closer attention to details and are able to transfer that detail into our sketches. The students worked ont their Passion Projects with Ms. Pond this afternoon. Please practice Times Tables at home whenever you have a chance. What a difference an hour makes!! Everybody was pretty tired today. Make sure you get a good sleep tonight! :-)
Today we had a little science test about the Food Chains. Thanks to Mrs. Ramsay, our photos have been developed and they are truly amazing. Now our job is to think like an artist and give our works of art a title and an artist statement. This will create the caption for each photo that will be displayed at the Spring Gala. Today we glued our bones from our pellets into a display. This activity took tremendous care and cooperation amongst group members. Students had to be very precise, using tweezers and toothpicks to glue the teeny tiny bones. It was a challenge and they all rose to the challenge. Good work kids!
We also went to an assembly and sketched owls with our buddies. REMEMBER it is daylight savings time this weekend and we will roll our clocks AHEAD and hour. Make sure you get a good sleep on Sunday night so you will be ready for the busy week we have ahead:-) Today we worked on division in math- making equal groups of things and connecting division to multiplication. Any chance you have at home to practice and memorize the times tables would be most helpful to learning multiplication and division as well.
Grade 4s worked on division with remainders. In science, we counted our bones from our pellets and made a graph. Next we tried to reconstruct the skeleton of the animal that was in the pellet. Tomorrow we will glue the bones onto a paper background. This morning we did some owl research and learned how to take jot notes and turn our jot notes into a paragraph.
Mr. W. came and helped us choose our 4 best photos for the art installation. This afternoon we worked in our groups to decide how to display our owl pellet bones. There are several options. As a group we decided which presentation was a 1, 2, 3, or a 4. We made a plan on how we would do this and we will make our displays tomorrow. We also skecthed some owls by watching a you tube video. Some students were interested in practicing at home. Here is the link: it is called How to draw an owl -Art a la Cart. Today we reviewed what we found out about food chains and did a little mini quiz.
We took a look at the photos we took on Friday at Fish Creek PArk and chose 12 that we liked - 3 for each of the 4 categories we were looking for. Tomorrow, Mr. W. will come and help us choose the best photo for each category. In "Owls and The Family", the main characters decided to enter their pet owls and all of their other owls into a town parade hoping to win a prize. It was comical when the rattle snake got out of the box and everyone panicked. Ask your child to recount the event. |
