Reminders:
No school Friday Tomorrow is a FULL DAY!!! It will be cold, please wear all your snow gear for outside recess! It is red and green day tomorrow. Please wear something red or green. Choir is singing tomorrow at Carolling Time- 9:15 We had a very lovely day today. We worked hard on finishing up our 12 Days of Christmas song and we performed them for the rest of the class. Using information from Ukraine, Peru, India or Tunisia added a different spin and help us find out facts about the other countries. Very interesting! We worked for a long time today to calculate how many presents there were in total for the 12 days of Christmas. At first we thought it was 78....today we looked at the problem a little closer. We realized that on the first day, there was 1 porcupine in a pine tree. So that made 1 gift. On the second day there were 2 caribou AND a porcupine in a pine tree, which makes 3 gifts for the 2nd day but there was still the 1 porcupine from the first day. That makes 4 gifts total. So you can see how there were so many more than first expected. One student used great logic and said the person in the song would get 12 porcupines in a pine tree. So... they figured 12 X 1 = 12 Next they would get 11 caribou over the 12 days so 11 X 2 = 22.etc- great math thinking going on today. We had a great day at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, despite the cold weather. A huge big thank you to parents who volunteered at such a busy time!!!! We learned a lot about seeds and how they travel. We learned pollinators and why plants are so important to us. Did you know a coconut is a seed and it can float? Fascinating.
We went on a nature walk and saw a beaver's dam, a bald eagle, a hawk and a white tailed deer eating in the snowy woods. We saw lots of magpie nests to. They are huge and we found out they have a front door and a back door too! Your should should be able to tell you why. There is no school on Friday for students. REMINDER- WE ARE GOING ON OUR FIELD TRIP TOMORROW! THE WEATHER MAY BE SNOWY AND COLD. THIS MEANS WE MUST REMEMBER TO DRESS FOR THE WEATHER AS SOME OF OUR DAY WILL BE OUTSIDE WALKING AND SKETCHING OR PHOTOGRAPHING. CHILDREN WILL NEED WARM CLOTHES AND A HEALTHY LUNCH- as wasteless as possible- AND SOME WATER.
Last few days for food bank items! Today we had carolling in the gym. Parents are welcome to join us each morning at 9:20. We sang A Porcupine in a Pine Tree at carols this morning. When we got back to class, we used this book as an idea to learn about The 4 countries we are studying in Social Studies. We worked in pairs and chose one of the 4 countries. We looked for information to substitute for the Canadian version of this song. Tomorrow we will finish and share when we get back from our field trip. In Math, we tried to figure out how many presents the person in that song received in total. We are still working on it. We are getting so excited for santa! It's hard to stay focused on our work!!!!!
Just 5 more days of school work and then we can relax. Today we made a plan for a healthy dinner- thinking of a special family get together. We wrote a menu of all that we wanted to serve and described it like you would read in a menu. "The succulent turkey drenched it herb infused gravy." Then we drew a picture of our meal and made a shopping list. We had a $50 budget to go "shopping" for the ingredients. We looked through food flyers to find the items on our shopping list and cut them out. Then we had to total all of our groceries to see if we were on budget or not. Most of us were able to do it. Some of us really were challenged with the math but persisted with the hard work and completed the job. Good work kids! Reminders: Food bank donations Diaper Drive Cookie dough is here if you ordered some Carolling next week in am choir sings on Dec. 21 No school next Friday. Today we started earning beads. We are doing this for our science/math project of a Bridge Symposium in January. WE need to earn enough money to buy the supplies to build a bridge! This is one way we can learn to count and exchange money. We are working on money problems in class and any opportunity to count real money will support us with our understanding.
Our Bridge Symposium will be a final project to showcase all of our learning about bridges, structures, different building materials and forces. We will have to write a proposal, make a budget, test different designs, make a model and present our model at the symposium. (this is all going to be done in class) Earning beads today was the beginning and everyone is so excited and motivated!! We spent some time on a website to research the different kinds of bridges and what makes them important. pbsbuilding big.org Today we practiced our badminton skills. We are showing great improvement!
We learned about nouns and verbs. We worked on our Passion Project with Ms. Pond. Talk to your child about their project. Students can do some research at home as well and bring it into to school and add it to what they have here. In mathwe will be working on problems with money. Practice at home skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, 2os, 25s, 50s and 100s. Any chance where students have an opportunity to use "real life situations" to count money or figure our change would be very helpful in class. REMINDERS: 1) Field Trip Notices Due on Friday for trip to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on Dec. 19. 2) Diaper Drive 3) Food bank Donations 4) Carolling in the gym next week at 9:15 5) Dec 21- choir will sing for us. Reminders:
No school on Friday- PD day. Bring TWAS and homework tomorrow. If you can, please bring a donation for the food drive and/or the diaper drive:-) Today we had a "surprise math test". It was one question to see if we are remembering the 6 steps Ms. Miller taught us to solve a word problem. While looking at graphs today, we talked about the difference between making an observation and inference based on the evidence in the graph.
In Science this afternoon, we looked at which shapes would make the strongest supports for a bridge: a square, a circle or a triangle. We made these into 3-D shapes: A rectangular prism, a triangular prism and a cylinder. Then we tested the shapes by adding weights. Not all groups finished this afternoon so I will have to wait until tomorrow to give the results. You could in the meantime discuss the experiment with your child - they should be able to give you the details of what happened in his/her group. Reminder for donations of diapers for the diaper challenge (sizes 4,5,6) and food donations for the food bank. Thank you so much. Wow! It's December already!
For Homework this week, please work on the following math problem. As well choose a book on RAZkids to read and answer questions. Grade 3 Ms. Miller wants to buy her mother a nice gift for christmas. The gift costs $25. Every Tuesday and Thursday, she walks the dog. Her mom gives her $5. If she starts tomorrow, will Ms. Miller have enough money to buy the present by Christmas? Show and explain you strategy on a piece of paper and bring it in on Thursday. Grade 4- Ms. Miller wants to buy her mom a gift for Christmas. The gift costs $125. Every Tuesday and Thursday, she walks the dog. Her mom gives her $15. Every Friday she earns $10 for vacuuming their house. If she starts tomorrow, will Ms. Miller have enough money to buy the present by Christmas? Show and explain you strategy on a piece of paper and bring it in on Thursday. We read a book today called "What Do You Do With a Problem? The boy in the book was very worried about a problem. The problem was following him around. The more he worried, the bigger the problem grew. He finally realized that every problem is an OPPORTUNITY. Ask your child what this means. Maple Ridge has started our Food Bank Drive and the Diaper Drive. If you are able to, any donations for either of these causes would be appreciated. |
