Wow! The last day in January!
PLEASE BRING IN ALL SWIMMING FORMS And SWIMMING ABILITY FORM SO THE POOL CAN MAKE GROUPS. We have been busy working on our assembly for Friday at 10:00. Please come and see our reader's theatre of The Great Kapok Tree if you are able. For the assembly on Friday, I have asked if anyone has any kind of props for the play- like snakes, monkeys, parrots or clothing that could help with the costumes. That would be great.

Today another "SWIMMING ABILTY Form" went home. This one is from the Acadia Swimming Pool where the lessons will take place. YOU NEED TO FILL THIS ONE OUT TOO - the other one was for the CBE. Please fill it out and send back as soon as possible so the swim instructors can organize the students into levelled grouping.
Students must bring their recorders to school tomorrow for Music. We started our bridges today. Students were very focused and on task for the most part. Tomorrow we will revisit the expectations and see if we need to make any adjustments, particularly with how they look. One requirement was that they be "aesthetically pleasing." We will also begin testing the bridges to see if they can stand up to wind (a fan) and weight (250g). Our assemebly is on Friday @ 10:00 and we would like to extend an invitation to all parents. No School tomorrow.
Swim forms went home today. Please fill out swimm ability form and sign Parent Consent Form and return next week We had anticipated having bridges built to show at these interviews, but we were not quite ready to build. We will start next week. Please book a time for parent teacher interviews if you have not done so already. Tomorrow we will dismiss at 1:20. Interviews will begin at 3:30 and end at 7:30. Thank you Mrs. J Hebenton [email protected] Practice times tables. Read a good book. Do something fun outside this weekend. TWAS tomorrow - please bring green notebooks if they are at home.
Today we learned about an array in Math. An array is a way to draw a picture of a multiplication sentence. For example: 3 X 4 = __ The 3 tells me I have 3 rows and the 4 tells me I have 4 in each row. I would draw/represent this like this: XXXX XXXX XXXX This shows as well repeated addition which is also related to multiplication. Next week the Grade 3 s and 4s will start RECORDERS!!!! If you have your recorder at home-Please bring it in so you can get started on learning music and earning belts!:-) Today we continued with multiplication in math. We tried some word problems that could be solved with either repeated addition or with multiplication. Grade 4s tried 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication. And grade threes tries a word problem that asked students to figure out how many groups and how many in each group or "groups of" and then how to write a multiplication sentence to go with it.
WE will be swimming in February5-8. We will leave the school at 9:15, swim from 9:30-10:15 and return to the school by 10:35. We will be needing some volunteers to help in change rooms if you are available- especially males to go into boys change room. You do not have to come and ride on the bus-you can just meet us at the pool. Some students brought book orders home yesterday. They will be due on Thursday next week. Please remember to book an appointment to come in and discuss report cards and see the work your children have been up to. Today we read a story called the Great Kapok Tree. We read this story to help us think about the importance of caring for our natural resources.
In math we looked at patterns in the Times Tables- specifically, the 2s, 4s and 8s. We noticed that the answers for the 4 times tables were double the 2 times tables and the 8 times tables were double the 4 times tables. If you could practice these sets of times tables at homes that would be great. Grade 3s need to know up to 5 X 5- but if they wish to challenge themselves and learn up to ? X 10 or past the 5 times tables- they definitely welcome to do that. Students are working on their "Passion Projects" and are learning how to make Google Slides. Some will use this to present their information. Discuss their projects with them.:-) FYI_ THERE IS NO TOP KIDS ON FRIDAY. THURSDAY IS FUN LUNCH PLEASE RETURN REPORT CARD ENVELOPS SO WE CAN REUSE THEM FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD For our Bridge Building Symposium, we could use any paper towel rolls or Toilet paper rolls if you have any that you would like to donate to the project. Thx! Today was a busy day.
We finished our good copies of our proposal letters to the President about our bridges we are going to build. We read a comical story today from India that reminded many of us about the story, "there was an old lady who swallowed a fly", combined with "the little red hen." Most students felt the lesson or moral was to be polite and ask for help in a kind way to get the best results. In Math we began discussing multiplication. We look at multiplication as "GROUP OF" things. So when i see 2 X 3= ? I say 2 groups of 3 equals 6. We lbegan to investigate how multiplication is like repeated addition- so 3 groups of 3 is the same as (3 + 3 + 3 = 9) or ( 3 X 3 = 9). Another thing we noticed today is that multiplication and division are related and make Fact Families. For example: 3 x 4 = 12 4X 3 = 12 12 ~ 4 = 12 ( can't make a division sign on this computer:-)) 12 ~3 = 4 So i use the same 3 numbers and create 4 related number sentences. Any extra practice of Times Tables at home would be very helpful. Grade 3s are expected to know up to 5 x 5 memorized. We will be working on this for the next week or 2. This Thursday is FUN LUNCH. Reminder there is no school tomorrow.
Today we had a chance to do some programming with the Ozobots. Ms. Langlois came to help us with that this afternoon. We used the new ipads to program them. We had a lot of fun. We revised our proposal letters today and began a sketch that we need to include for our Bridge Symposium. We looked at pictures on line and are trying to decide which bridge we want our own bridge to look like. Our drawing needs to scientific, drawn with accuracy, labels and measurements. Students need to be able to explain the shapes that are in their bridges that make their particular bridge strong and also what materials their bridge would be made from and where it might be used. We are still earing beads to use as money that we will need to purchase the supplies for our bridges. Have a great weekend! |
