Reminder that tonight is the Spring Gala. Students of room 8 need to be in the classroom by 7:10. First they will drop off their outdoor items and then move to room 9 so they are ready for our presentation.
Please come earlier to have a view at the amazing work our students have been working on. Our work can be found down stairs in the hallways as well as the art room. Take time to read the process from the beginning of dissecting owl pellets to the photographs and the sketches of owls.

Many of you have been receiving messages from the school to inform you about the Spring Gala. I am sorry that I have forgotten to put the information onto our blog to keep you up to date for what students in room 8 are expected to do, time to arrive and what to wear.
TIME: Students need to be in the classroom by 7:10pm. Our performance is scheduled around 10 - 20 minutes after students arrive depending on how long the other performances are going as well as transitions. When you arrive at the school, you will be given a program which will give you an actual time of your childs performance. Between each performance, parents will be exiting the gym and lining up for each class thereafter. Feel free to wander the halls and enjoy the art work everyone has been working hard to create while you are waiting for our specific time. There will not be much time after the performance to enjoy this so please come a bit earlier to take in the sights. If you come early enough, your child can give you the tour before they are expected in the classroom. ATTIRE: Students in room 8 do not have a specific outfit or colour they are expected to wear. Students know they will be standing in front of an audience, so they have been asked to wear nice clothes for the occasion. Please do not feel that you need to go shopping for this event. What students wear to school on a regular day is perfect. SIBLINGS: We spoke to the students today that they will not be able to see other classes perform however siblings are welcome to view as long as they are with their parents and that they are in their classrooms by the time they are about to perform. If you have any questions, please send me an email and I can give further clarification. Today I was very excited to continue to try something new with TWAS. Some of you may have noticed that we have started to create mini art creations to help expand our thinking and to make stronger connections with our learning through the week. The first two times we tried this, students used loose parts to create a picture about a learning experience. The third time we used only paper and glue. Today I took it one step further and and students to attach an emotion to the learning experience. I was surprised by the variety of emotions and learning experiences students chose to share with parents. Some students shared their happiness to be practicing for the Spring Gala, some shared sadness of a group member not being able to do a dance move for their choreography in gym and others expressed their frustration of loosing their place in the creation of the pi art. Please take time to read your child TWAS and ask questions as to why they felt the way they did about that learning experience. In addition, students in grade 3 and 4 have been invited to participate in the Science Olympics. Please see the following information from Ms. Pittman and Ms. Frazer who will be leading students in this activity.
Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 3 and 4 students, We have entered two teams to represent Maple Ridge School at the APEGA Science Olympics held in May. The APEGA Science Olympics is an event where students are given a series of problem-solving challenges that demonstrate the fun side of engineering and geoscience, and allow students to see first-hand how these fields impact our everyday lives. Students cover many areas of scientific study, while learning to work and interact within a group. They use their skills and innovative ideas to develop creative solutions to various challenges. Students have the opportunity to attend a meeting to hear more about Science Olympics and demonstrate the important skills needed to be part of the Maple Ridge team on Tuesday March 20, 2018 during lunch in Room 1. In order to participate, students need to be able to commit to being at the event on Saturday May 12, 2018 as well as meeting to work on the projects during lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout April and early May. If your child is interested in this opportunity and demonstrates skills in the areas of collaboration, teamwork, problem solving, design thinking and they are passionate about science, they are welcome to attend the first meeting on Tuesday March 20, 2018. The final 10 students (five grade three students) and (five grade four students) will be selected based on a lottery process. Sincerely, Kim Pittman [email protected] Meagan Fraser [email protected] Reminder that the Spring Gala is next Thursday evening. We have been working hard on our captions and layout. The work is turning out incredible and we can't wait to show you. Yesterday morning students spent some time exploring texts trying to understand the characteristics of captions. Some of the characteristics students came up with were: Bold lettering, different types of font from the other text, different colours, inside a picture, inside a box, close to the picture, one words, sentences, places, dates, additional information, relevant to the rest of the page.
From this point, as a class we created a template of what a caption may look like for our gala pictures. Students came up with the following headings: BOLD TITLE Artist: Date and Place: Technique: Purpose: Artist Statement: Today students began to write their captions, but it was discovered that there may be some missing information still. Information such as scientific vocabulary, photography vocabulary, clear purposes, techniques. For the next couple of days, students will be working on creating and improving these captions through review lessons and peer feedback. I must apologize for the lack of blog posts lately. The students and myself have been busy trying to get things ready for the field trip tomorrow, the assembly on Friday and trying to pick our pictures to print for the Gala.
To get you all up to date . . . . Students have been working very hard at narrowing all their pictures from Fridays day at Fish Creek down to 4. First students deleted any photos that were blurry. Next they scanned the backgrounds and looked for things that shouldn't be in the pictures such as fingers, toes jackets, people and other misc. items. Next students had to decide on the the story and which pictures told stories and which were just for fun. Finally they got to sit down with Mr. W today and pick their final four. It will be amazing once all of these pictures get put together and displayed for all to enjoy. Reminder that students in room 8 will be hosting the assembly on Friday at 10am. If you are able to join us you will be able to hear them play London Bridge is falling down and view the mini movie about our process through the Bridge Symposium inquiry. Please take time to review basic facts at home of multiplication and division facts. As students begin to memorize these facts, their become more efficient at harder mathematical problems and questions. This week our normal schedule has been turned up side down. Students have been attempting to complete their scientific procedure for the owl pellets. It started out as
Wondering - I wonder what is inside an owl pellet. Hypothesis - This varied between students. Some students said nothing, that the pellet was hollow, others said bones, some said seeds. Materials - we listed all the materials we would need to complete the disection Procedure - Students created a step by step process one could follow to dissect the pellet Results - Today students listed and charted the number of bones they found by using the classification charts. Conclusion - Students stated if their hypothesis was correct or incorrect and why as well as what they learned. I am hoping that we can continue to follow the scientific procedure as we determine more wonderings and create more experiments. REMEMBER tomorrow is our field study outside to Fish Creek Park. Students are encouraged to dress for the weather. There is a forecast of lots of snow so be sure to wear snow pants and boots! |
